LOUDOUN COUNTY

Google adds 1 billion dollars (per year) to Loudoun County GDP

Google stall at an event in Germany 🇩🇪.

Google's data center activity has added an average of $1.1 billion to Loudoun County's GDP each year (according to a report by Google and Deloitte).

Some stats:

  • The company's operations have directly and indirectly supported 3,500 jobs, creating a $330 million dollar impact on the local employment market.

  • This has resulted in a $100 million dollars of economic activity from increased household spending.

  • Google strategically invested $1.8 billion total into Loudoun County because of the abundance of available land, energy and optical fiber infrastructure, and the high level of skill in the workforce.

Google's report also emphasized the company's efforts to reduce its environmental impact and support the surrounding community. This includes investments in STEM education, job training programs, and collaborations with community nonprofits.

ALEXANDRIA

Food truck entrepreneurs fighting against city ordinance

Entrepreneurs Shihan and Amgd opened a food truck called Flavor Hive a few months ago. Despite slow business in the first week, they quickly gained popularity.

Most of their growth can be attributed to Shihan consistently creating content on Instagram, which has led to nonstop lines of customers eager to try their fusion dishes.

Recently Flavor Hive received a warning from an Alexandria city official, saying they are in violation of an ordinance that says they can't serve food past 8 pm.

The owners say this limitation is unfair because the location where they park (the landmark building on Duke Street) has many people who work late, leaving them with limited dining options.

Customers lined up for dinner service

Despite all this, Flavor Hive continues to provide heartfelt service to their community. They have garnered significant attention and support, both locally and on social media, for their dedication to offering affordable meals for people in the area. If you’d like to visit the truck or hire Flavor Hive for catering, here’s their website.

THE DISTRICT

New deal keeps Wizards and Capitals in Washington.

After many months, The Capitals and Wizards have secured a $515 million deal to stay in D.C. until at least 2050. This a reversal of the infamous proposal to relocate to Alexandria.

The agreement includes a complete transformation of the Capital One Arena, an expansion into the nearby Gallery Place complex, and improvements in transportation options in the surrounding Chinatown neighborhood.

The deal entails the District providing $515 million over three years for construction costs, allowing billionaire owner Ted Leonsis to expand into 200,000 square feet in Gallery Place. This expansion will include a new practice facility for the Wizards downtown.

Leonsis envisions a revamped Capital One Arena with better sound, improved sight lines, and a reconfiguration of seating to align with modern arena designs. Construction will be carried out during the off-season, likely taking at least four years to complete.

Bonus: After this deal was made public, George Mason University announced that the plans they had to build a cricket stadium had been cancelled.
