Today’s factoid of the day is: Mark Twain really liked cats — so much so that he had 19 of them at once.

THE BIG IDEA

VHSL refuses to overturn Hayfield’s two-year postseason ban.

In a letter so biting it could make a pit bull wince, VHSL Executive Director John "Billy" Haun dropped the proverbial hammer on Hayfield's football program, recommending a two-year postseason ban for what he deemed a "failure to uphold the integrity of Virginia High School League membership." Talk about a stinging indictment!

Some background:

The Virginia High School League issued a two-year postseason ban on Hayfield Secondary School's football team for alleged violations of recruiting rules and failure to uphold the integrity of the league's membership.

Specifically, VHSL claims that 24 football players improperly transferred to Hayfield, decimating another school's program in the process. The league alleges that Hayfield's administration failed to properly address the eligibility issues around these transfers, leading to an unfair stacking of Hayfield's team.

Now, while Fairfax County Public Schools plans to appeal this ban to the VHSL's 37-member executive committee (because what's a good sports drama without a little legal wrangling?), one can't help but wonder: what's the market for a football team that plays by its own rules?

Perhaps they're just catering to the helicopter-parent crowd, who'll do anything to ensure their little superstars get the spotlight. Or maybe they're trying to create a new brand of extreme football, where the only rule is "there are no rules." Either way, it's a bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it pays off for 'em.

But fear not, dear readers, for the VHSL has spoken, and the verdict is clear: Hayfield's football team is grounded, at least for the time being. So, as they say in the sports world, it's time to hang up the cleats, take a seat on the bench, and reflect on the importance of playing by the rules. After all, what's the fun in winning if you've already lost the game of sportsmanship?
